 The OSHA Consultation Program is a Center with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the College of Public Health and is funded through a Federal Grant.  The goal of the Center for the Occupational Health Planning & Education (COHPE) is to provide workplace safety and health through education and consultation. The position reports to senior program administrative personnel.


 Under general direction, engages in the full spectrum of safety and health compliance assessment and training activities to small employers covered by the Federal OSHA Act and other National Consensus Standards. The position requires a high level of safety and health technical expertise.   This position requires travel to assigned sites that may include overnight travel.  A valid Driver License is required.


 Schedule, travel, and provide consultation services that may encompass the development of appropriate recommendations for customer implementation and/or improvement of their safety and health program. Employ workable management principles in the development of an effective and efficient safety and health system. May include the following: provide statistical incident information, an explanation of the value of employee involvement in the process and an evaluation of their existing management systems for effectiveness.

 Upon request, inspect small businesses throughout the state of Florida to identify violations of occupational safety and health regulation. Assist employers working to establish a management system in the prevention of injuries and incidents. Prepare formal reports and ensure accurate and timely data entry and documentation of findings in accordance with occupational safety and health regulations and guidelines.

 Responsible for the day to day field activity of reports and case files to ensure all operational procedures are followed and in compliance with OSHA’s standards, OSHA’s Consultation Policy and Procedure Manual (CPPM) and our Internal Quality Assurance Procedure (IQAP).

 Conduct onsite consultations, training, and follow up visits to achieve the established goals set out in the program annual Consultation Annual Project Plan.

 Conduct sampling to determine if there are potential employee exposures to toxic chemical and physical agents or know when a referral to qualified health is needed.

 Create training materials, compose speeches, participate in seminars, workshops and conferences in an effort of promoting workplace safety and health activities, formally and informally to employers as well as students attending classes sponsored by the USF OSHA Training Institute Education Center.

 Perform other Administrative duties as assigned by the program Director to support the mission and function of the area of responsibility.



This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a Physical science, Engineering or related field, with one year experience in a safety and health consultation or inspection-related position. Relevant experience in safety and health consultation and/or inspections, and/or industrial hygiene to include audits and management systems may substitute on a year for year basis for the required degree.


A  Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related field; certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP); minimum of seven years of safety and health experience; minimum of five years of consultation; lead auditor; management systems (ISO 45001, ANSI Z-10) or process safety experience.


Thorough knowledge of Federal/State/Industry safety and occupational health regulations & management systems. Excellent communicator to employees, employers and public officials.
