Upcoming Chapter Meetings

In addition to networking and good food, you can also now earn CEU's for attending the monthly meetings.

I am pleased to announce that three of our meetings have been approved by ASSE for Continuing Education Units. ASSE has a program to award these 'short duration classes' to members. The catch is that you have to attend all three of the meetings in order to get any of the CEU's. The first was our October meeting. We are looking into making it three out of four meetings for those that were unable to attend the all meetings.

  • July 2009 ~ No Meeting
  • August 10, 2009 ~ Lakeland Center-Ice Rink Site Tour, Lakeland
  • September 14, 2009 ~ Ergonomics - Tampa

All meetings will take place the second Monday of the month. If this is a holiday... we will hold it the third Monday.

The 2nd Annual West Florida Chapter Professional Development Conference has been cancelled.

Reimbursements will be issued shortly, stay tuned for details.

Thanks to our sponsors for their support!

ASP Exam Prep Workshop
June 7-9, 2009
CSP Exam Prep Workshop
June 10-12, 2009

Overview These courses are designed to prepare individuals for the comprehensive examination leading to certification as an ASP or CSP. The ASP workshop will help you determine whether you are ready to take the examination. You will learn about the core examination materials and become familiar with resources to prepare you for success!

The CSP course covers the four areas of the exam: engineering, management, information management and communications and professional conduct and ethics. The course consists of lectures, sample problems, and discussions on a variety of subjects to prepare the student for either exam. Pertinent reference materials are also discussed to allow students to focus their studies in specific areas prior to sitting for the exams.

The American Board of Industrial Hygiene has awarded ASP 3.0 Safety CM Points, approval #08-2494 and CSP Exam Prep Workshop 3.0 Safety CM Points, approval #08-2493. The workshops will be held from 8 am - 4 pm each day.

Refund requests must be made in writing 2 weeks prior to course and a 20% processing fee will be deducted. Make checks payable to University of Alabama at Birmingham. If workshop is cancelled, The Deep South Center cannot be held responsible for travel expenses.

President's Message

It is an extreme honor and privilege to have been elected President of the West Florida Chapter of ASSE for the 2008-2009 term. I will work hard to continue to earn your trust and confidence in my ability to lead this chapter.

The objectives established by the Past President, Brian Warrick are still pertinent, so our chapter will continue: to improve networking and mentoring opportunities, increase professional development capability and increase chapter participation. In addition, I have a goal of reaching out to the young people in the community to educate them on the career opportunities available to them as a safety professional. We will continue to offer quality technical sessions as well as plant tours for our monthly meetings.

Your executive board is committed to supporting the goals of the Society of ASSE: to promote the advancement of the safety profession and development of our members. We will work to provide recognition to our members who are working quietly to provide safe workplaces for employees. We will reach out to other Professional Organizations who strive to protect workers from injury/illness.

I look forward to a successful year, but I cannot do this without your help. Please send me your ideas for meetings, or let me know what your executive board can do to further your development as a safety professional. I encourage everyone to become involved in our chapter by attending the meetings and volunteering to give us the benefit of your expertise to make our chapter even better.

Yours in safety,

Barbara R. Cooksey, CSP, ARM
President, West Florida Chapter, ASSE
